We recently did a survey on our Facebook group, SLIG 2017. We asked past attendees where they recommended eating during the week of SLIG. Here are the first seven, in order of the votes they received. Please be sure to check the websites of the restaurants for more information.

Blue Lemon - 55 West South Temple, Salt Lake City, 801-328-2583. They are open Monday - Thursday 7 am- 9 pm, Friday-Saturday 7 am - 10 pm. Prices range from $3.50 for a Hummus Plate starter to $14.50 for Iron-Seared Salmon.

AncestryProGenealogists Scholarship Announced

Application Deadline December 31, 2016

Ancestry announced today that it is accepting applications for a new AncestryProGenealogists Scholarship Program, established to "foster and support professional genealogists in their ongoing development efforts."  

Four "aspiring or practicing professional genealogists" will receive a scholarship, to cover tuition, round-trip economy airfare, and hotel expenses to attend one of the four U.S.-based genealogical institutes.  One will be awarded to attend SLIG 2018.  We were contacted early on to determine our interest in this program and are pleased to be included in this amazing opportunity.

Eligible applicants are those who "demonstrate a commitment to genealogy as a profession, a desire for professional development, and the ability to communicate that commitment and desire in writing."  

AncestryProGenealogists "has helped people trace their family trees and connect with the past for more than 15 years."  They employ a team of experts with a variety of genealogical specialities.  Their motivation?  "Many of these experts received high-quality training from institutions such as SLIG, IGHR, GRIP and Gen-Fed. We want to provide the same quality professional development to dedicated genealogists to support their next steps in the industry."

Unfortunately, due to a lot of complicating factors, applicants won't be aware of the courses to be offered for SLIG 2018 until after they have completed their application.  For that reason, we offer the opportunity to have open dialogue with the director if you feel it is needed to help you rank SLIG in order of attendance preference on your application.

An Upcoming Webinar with Paula Stuart-Warren

Paula Stuart-Warren is the coordinator for the 2017 SLIG course entitled "Taking Your Research to the Next Level." However, that is not the only venue where you can find Paula providing her knowledge and expertise. 

On December 1st, Paula will be leading a FamilyTree webinar, entitled "Illinois Genealogy Research Strategies."

Paula will be discussing how to trace your Illinois ancestors!

UGA DNA Special Interest Group

Please join us Tuesday, November 22nd, at 7:00 pm for the monthly DNA SIG meeting. Stephanie Saylor will present "How Might I Use Mitochondrial DNA."

Stephanie will discuss Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) matching, what is realistic, and what can be done to help bridge the gap of knowledge we all struggle with on our maternal lines. She will additionally demonstrate how to navigate through FamilyTreeDNA to consider pathways that might be utilized to answer various questions.  While the class is focused on mtDNA, Stephanie will also address how autosomal DNA it is augmented by understanding a match’s haplogroup, one's own haplogroup, or appropriate research plans. 

The DNA SIG meets under the direction of Stephanie Saylor, who holds a degree in biology with an emphasis in neuroscience.  She combines her love of genealogy with a background in genetic research to put together presentations for this group. 

Presentations are facilitated online through GoToWebinar.  Participants are welcome to ask questions throughout, and the recordings are made available for UGA member viewing. For additional information, or to register, please visit the UGA website.

Hilton Dining Options at SLIG 2017

The Hilton Salt Lake City Center is centrally located to some of the best dining Salt Lake City has to offer.  There are dozens of places to eat within about a one-block walk; more if you wish to venture out a bit.  But let's start with what will be right at the Hilton.

• Starbucks:  Offers beverages, breakfast sandwiches, pastries, and a limited selected of sandwiches and soup until 4:00 pm daily.
  NEW this year - an optional breakfast package may be pre-purchased for SLIG dates. Includes choice of one bread and one drink each day, Monday through Friday, $9/day, tax and tip inclusive (5 day package $45). The package may be pre-purchased by updating your SLIG registration.  

• Lunch Kiosk:  Open during SLIG week only. The Hilton lunch kiosk will offer grab and go soup, salad, and sandwiches. Participants may eat in SLIG Central if they wish.

• Trofi Bistro: Trofi is open for both breakfast and lunch. Their hot breakfast buffet includes omelets and waffles made to order. Their lunch menu offers a variety of soups, salads, sandwiches, and sides.
  NEW this year - optional breakfast buffet package may be pre-purchased for SLIG dates. Includes full buffet Monday through Friday, $18/day tax and tip inclusive (5-day package $90).  You may pre-purchase this by updating your SLIG registration.

Winner of the SLIG 2017 Scholarship for First Time Attendees Announced

The Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy is pleased to announce Cheri Hudson Passey as the winner of the SLIG 2017 Scholarship for First Time Attendees. The competition was strong and many candidates submitted worthy applications. The committee determined that Ms. Passey's application demonstrated her readiness to participate in the institute experience.

Ms. Passey will be attending the course entitled “Taking Your Research to the Next Level” with Paula Stuart-Warren.

Ms. Passey noted "I would love the opportunity to participate in SLIG and learn from the best of the best, then take that knowledge and apply it to researching my family and teach it to others as they learn to research their own."

SLIG Special Events Registration to Open Monday, November 14th

Hear Ye Hear Ye!  Special Event Information is now completely posted online.

Registration options will open on Monday morning, November 14th.  To add special events, please log into your existing registration using your email address and confirmation number.  New students will be able to add them at the time of their registration beginning on that date as well.

The week, centered around the theme "History in the Making," will include the return of the popular new SLIG Central with Maia's Bookstore, SLIG Swag, and more.  SLIG Night at the Family History Library will again be offered this year, with a focus on hands-on hands and informative classes about FamilySearch record collections and accreditation.

If you are new to SLIG, or haven't attended for a year or two, join us for a brief orientation and learn about how to make the most of your SLIG experience.

SLIG 2017 Opening Session Keynote Announced

We are pleased to announce that CeCe Moore will be the keynote speaker for the SLIG 2017 Opening General Session. She will present "Making History with Genetic Genealogy."

CeCe, who is course coordinator for the DNA Boot Camp: Practical Application, notes that with genetic genealogy, we are often "both rewriting and making history at the same time." DNA, genetic genealogists, family trees, and other technologies have played a giant role in rewriting and making history of late.  And CeCe Moore has been right in the middle of it all.

In this presentation, CeCe will share some behind-the-scenes insights on recent cases - from the Finding Your Roots LL Cool J case to the triple foundling case broadcast on 20/20.

The general session will be held on Monday, January 23, 2017, at 7:00 pm and is open to all SLIG 2017 students and instructors.  Join us to hear "the rest of the story."

New Publication from ICAPGen

The Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG) has outstanding coordinators and instructors each year sharing their knowledge and expertise with the students.

Most of those individuals are credentialed, denoted by either an AG (Accredited Genealogist) or CG (Certified Genealogist) behind their name. The International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists (ICAPGen), one of two credentialing bodies, has recently released a new guide to help genealogists both consider the option of, and navigate through the credentialing process with their organization. The guide is titled "Guide to Applying for an AG Credential."

ICAPGen is based in Salt Lake City and jointly sponsors an evening event at SLIG in conjunction with the Family History Library.

SLIG 2017: Help us Make even more History

SLIG 2017 is a year of firsts.  

• First year with 16 courses.  Yes we opened with 14, but we now have 16; DNA and Virginia have literally cloned themselves and are running two courses concurrently.  That means we just met the director's goal for 2019.
• First year with over 400 students attending.
• First year with 90% of the available seats filled.
• First year running out of space for some courses that were expected to be smaller in nature and weren't.
• First year using a theme.  Indeed "History in the Making" was inspired by all these "firsts," and will provide a fun way to celebrate throughout the week.

Therefore, the director has this very strange idea that we should hit another "first":  filling every seat available.  A BHAG (big hairy audacious goal that stands not much of a chance in 30 years of being met), but now actually within our reach.

And what does that mean?  We are engaging your help.  When new people register between now and Saturday, November 12th, we will ask them who referred them.  And your name, should you be the referring party, will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift certificate at your choice of Spencer's or Trofi at the Hilton.

UGA at St. George Family Roots Expo this weekend

SLIG 2017 Banquet Keynote Speaker

We are pleased to announce that Barbara Vines Little, CG, FNGS, FVGS, will be the keynote speaker for the SLIG 2017 banquet. She will present "Rewriting History: Who Our Ancestors Really Were."

The completion celebration banquet will begin at 7:00 pm on Friday, January 27, 2017, and will include door prizes, the annual UGA awards - to include the coveted Silver Tray Award and announcement of the 2016 FUGA (Fellow of UGA), a catered meal, and the keynote address.

The banquet will be preceded by a no-host bar and networking social.  Tickets are required to attend; the cost of the banquet is included with SLIG registration, but RSVP is required; guest tickets are available for an additional fee. These items may be added to your registration in early November.

New this year: 

SLIG sponsor HistoryLines will create a historical setting for the event. Clues will be provided during the social and at the beginning of the banquet that will reveal an important character related to Vines Little's presentation.

Genealogists have data, data, data! Often piles of it stacked on every available flat surface in their home.
