Fall 2017 SLIG Virtual Advanced Evidence Analysis Practicum

Back by popular demand, SLIG will offer the Virtual Advanced Evidence Analysis Practicum course again in 2017. This unique course tests a student's ability to plan, research, analyze, correlate, and solve a complex genealogical research problem.

This SLIG course challenges students as they work through five complex cases, one each week from October 7th through November 11th. The five cases for the Virtual Practicum include four of those selected for the Advanced Evidence Analysis Practicum course taught in Salt Lake in January 2017.

Virtual Practicum participants have a week to work on the case and then they gather together online on Saturday to discuss the case with fellow classmates and the case study author/instructor. They have a chance to compare strategies, methodologies, difficulties and results before the instructor demonstrates the case solution. This gives participants experience in working on a wide variety of genealogical problems.

Student Requirements

This course is for advanced students. Previous participation in an advanced methodology course at SLIG, GRIP or IGHR, or equivalent experience and training, is recommended.

You should have a minimum of 10 hours per week during the course to work through the complex cases.

We will be using webcams to participate in video chats for the group discussions. If you do not have a webcam, you can participate via audio. All students should have a headset with a microphone to eliminate background noise.

 Session 2: 12:30 to 2:30pm (MDT)

Evenings at the 22ND Annual Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy

Evenings at the 22ND Annual Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy were packed with exciting events.

Plenary session: The 22nd anniversary plenary speaker was CeCe Moore. She presented "Making History with Genetic Genealogy" to a full house and mesmerized the audience with some behind-the-scenes insights on LL Cool J's story from the PBS Series Finding Your Roots.

On Wednesday, the 2nd annual SLIG Night at the FHL was held. It was a fun evening for students, who were able to participate in labs, classes, and research, of course! The International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists (ICAPGen) sponsored the event and provided the participants with light refreshments and a wonderful line-up of interesting topics.

History Lines created a historical setting for Friday's networking social and banquet. Clues were provided during the social and at the beginning of the banquet that provided insight into an important character related to Barbara Vines Little's presentation. Students were able to relax, celebrate the week and visit with friends, both old and new. A cash bar offered a variety of drink choices and a good time was had by all!

The completion banquet followed the social with the keynote being delivered by Barbara Vines Little. Barbara's presentation was entitled "Rewriting History: Who Our Ancestors Really Were." During the banquet, the Utah Genealogical Association presented the coveted Silver Tray award, the UGA Fellow award as well as a recognition award. Additionally, there were several door prizes that were awarded. The Silver Tray Award was presented to the American Society of Genealogists (ASG) for promoting the highest standards of genealogical scholarship and for its publication of The Genealogist, which is one of the leading American journals of scholarly genealogy. The award was accepted on behalf of ASG by Dr. Thomas W. Jones, who has been a fellow of ASG since 2007. This year, the UGA Fellow Award was given to Barbara Vines Little in recognition of her distinguished contributions and on-going commitment to the field of genealogy. The UGA Award of Merit was presented to Valerie L. Hansen for her service to the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG). For the past eight years, Valerie has served as the SLIG Registrar. Her dedication and hard work has ensured that hundreds of students have been able to experience the SLIG institute with minimal registration issues.

SLIG 2017: A Success!

The Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG) is a weeklong intensive educational experience that takes students deep into their topic of choice. Students that attended SLIG had the opportunity to elevate their education with renowned genealogy experts during a week-long experience, network through special events, and tap into the wealth of resources at the nearly Family History Library.

Sponsored by the Utah Genealogical Association, SLIG celebrated its 22nd year and is dedicated to remaining at the forefront of education on methodology and emerging technologies by offering a variety of courses - from country-focused to technology-based to records rich.

Virginia Class

SLIG is dedicated to offering courses that fill a high intermediate and advanced level educational need.  In 2017, genealogists had the opportunity to strengthen their core understanding by choosing one of fourteen courses. Each course provided twenty-five hours of in-depth genealogical instruction over a five-day period, with the exception of the Advanced Practicum course, which is structured to focus on research with two hours in the classroom daily.

Additionally, students had the opportunity to research at the nearby Family History Library, running shuttles after class and for course labs.

From the networking reception to the final banquet, SLIG 2017 offered plenty of opportunities to network with both instructors and colleagues.

Registration opens at 3 pm.  There are a lot of attendees this year, please be patient with each other as you get your materials.  We will have registration in the Canyon rooms, please follow the signs to the class you registered for.

We recently did a survey on our Facebook group, SLIG 2017. We asked past attendees where they recommended eating during the week of SLIG. Here are the first seven, in order of the votes they received. Please be sure to check the websites of the restaurants for more information.

An Upcoming Webinar with Paula Stuart-Warren

Paula Stuart-Warren is the coordinator for the 2017 SLIG course entitled "Taking Your Research to the Next Level." However, that is not the only venue where you can find Paula providing her knowledge and expertise. 

On December 1st, Paula will be leading a FamilyTree webinar, entitled "Illinois Genealogy Research Strategies."

Hilton Dining Options at SLIG 2017

The Hilton Salt Lake City Center is centrally located to some of the best dining Salt Lake City has to offer.  There are dozens of places to eat within about a one-block walk; more if you wish to venture out a bit.  But let's start with what will be right at the Hilton.

• Starbucks:  Offers beverages, breakfast sandwiches, pastries, and a limited selected of sandwiches and soup until 4:00 pm daily.
  NEW this year - an optional breakfast package may be pre-purchased for SLIG dates. Includes choice of one bread and one drink each day, Monday through Friday, $9/day, tax and tip inclusive (5 day package $45). The package may be pre-purchased by updating your SLIG registration.  

• Lunch Kiosk:  Open during SLIG week only. The Hilton lunch kiosk will offer grab and go soup, salad, and sandwiches. Participants may eat in SLIG Central if they wish.

• Trofi Bistro: Trofi is open for both breakfast and lunch. Their hot breakfast buffet includes omelets and waffles made to order. Their lunch menu offers a variety of soups, salads, sandwiches, and sides.

Winner of the SLIG 2017 Scholarship for First Time Attendees Announced

The Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy is pleased to announce Cheri Hudson Passey as the winner of the SLIG 2017 Scholarship for First Time Attendees. The competition was strong and many candidates submitted worthy applications. The committee determined that Ms. Passey's application demonstrated her readiness to participate in the institute experience.

Ms. Passey will be attending the course entitled “Taking Your Research to the Next Level” with Paula Stuart-Warren.

Ms. Passey noted "I would love the opportunity to participate in SLIG and learn from the best of the best, then take that knowledge and apply it to researching my family and teach it to others as they learn to research their own."

SLIG 2017 Opening Session Keynote Announced

We are pleased to announce that CeCe Moore will be the keynote speaker for the SLIG 2017 Opening General Session. She will present "Making History with Genetic Genealogy."

CeCe, who is course coordinator for the DNA Boot Camp: Practical Application, notes that with genetic genealogy, we are often "both rewriting and making history at the same time." DNA, genetic genealogists, family trees, and other technologies have played a giant role in rewriting and making history of late.  And CeCe Moore has been right in the middle of it all.

In this presentation, CeCe will share some behind-the-scenes insights on recent cases - from the Finding Your Roots LL Cool J case to the triple foundling case broadcast on 20/20.

The general session will be held on Monday, January 23, 2017, at 7:00 pm and is open to all SLIG 2017 students and instructors.  Join us to hear "the rest of the story."
