SLIG Fall Virtual 2022: Advanced Techniques for Mastering Online Searches and Uncovering Digital Records

Are you exhausting everything online as you undertake reasonably exhaustive research? Probably not.


Advanced Techniques for Mastering Online Searches and Uncovering Digital Records, coordinated by D. Joshua Taylor, MA, MLS, FUGA, will be offered during SLIG Fall Virtual 2022 for the first time in a multi-week format. This course specifically teaches advanced search skills for subscription family history websites while also focusing on unindexed digitized materials from libraries, archives, museums, and other repositories across the United States. Many hands-on opportunities will be provided. The online environment for this experience is perfect for instant exploration of websites and applying the new skills you are learning.

SLIG Fall Virtual 2022: Record Loss: Overcoming Destroyed, Missing or Non-Extant Records; Sources and Techniques/Methods

What do you do when the records you need to answer your research question are not there?

Few experiences frustrate genealogists more frequently or intensely than discovering that records are missing. The reasons for missing documents are many: burned courthouse; clerks tossing "obsolete" records; autograph hungers; relatives who just had to have that ancestral record; environmental factors such as heat, flood, humidity, insects; war; ink fading from time or sunlight. Sometimes just the distance an ancestor had to travel to the courthouse might mean that the hoped-for deed, will, or vital record was never filed.


Record Loss: Overcoming Destroyed, Missing or Non-Extant Records; Sources and Techniques/Methods, coordinated by Kelvin L. Meyers, will show you that in many cases, it's possible to overcome the problem of missing records. You will learn strategies, alternative sources, and techniques to find the information you thought was lost when that record could not be found.

SLIG Fall Virtual 2022: Advanced Hispanic Research

Do you have Hispanic ancestors? Do you want to become proficient in researching Hispanic genealogy? Competent researchers in Hispanic family history are in high demand. This course will help you advance your research skills to the next level.

Advanced Hispanic Research, coordinated by Debbie Gurtler, AG, will be offered during SLIG Fall Virtual 2022. Instruction will be provided on records and resources for almost every Spanish-speaking country. This course will help you to:

  • Extend your Hispanic research knowledge beyond the basics for the southwest United States, Latin America, and Spain;
  • Gain in-depth knowledge in civil registration, census, and parish records;
  • Acquire new skills using notarial records, military records, and other out-of-the-ordinary record types;
  • Identify migration patterns throughout the Hispanic colonial world;
  • Locate records and record collections found in archives around the world.

Proving Your Pedigree with DNA, coordinated by Karen Stanbary, MA, LCSW, CG, will lead you in applying your DNA analysis skills to the documentation of one of your ancestral lines back to a second great-grandparent couple. Learn to incorporate genetic evidence in a proof of parentage as part of a fully documented compiled genealogy meeting Genealogy Standards. First taught during SLIG Fall Virtual 2021 and receiving excellent reviews, this is the intermediate level DNA course you need.

Highlights of the course:

  • Practical step-by-step examples
  • Hands-on practice with your own DNA results and research project
  • Weekly private one-on-one consultations with expert faculty members
By the end of the course, you will have:
  • A source cited lineage, including proof of biological parentage that meets Genealogy Standards;

SLIG Fall Virtual 2022: Intermediate Foundations

Are you an advanced beginning or intermediate genealogist? Do you want to improve your skills to prepare for more advanced genealogy education? Check out the Intermediate Foundations course being offered during SLIG Fall Virtual 2022!

Coordinated by Annette Burke Lyttle, MA, this course provides an in-depth institute course to elevate your knowledge and skill level. You will expand your ability to find and analyze a number of record types and learn to conduct research using best practices and follow genealogical standards.

You will gain experience in your new skills through homework involving original records. A closed Facebook group will provide further conversation with participants and the instructors.

WANTED: Hive Minders for SLIG Fall Virtual 2022

Hive Minders make our virtual classrooms function smoothly, addressing challenges that arise. If you are comfortable with technology, consider applying to serve during one of the courses offered during SLIG Fall Virtual 2022.


Hive Minder job responsibilities include:

  • starting Zoom for each weekly class session;
  • managing closed captioning, breakout rooms, polls, and recordings;
  • assisting faculty and students with light tech and announcements;
  • taking attendance with the provided Airtable attendance tracker;
  • keeping SLIG staff aware of classroom and student issues or concerns.
Hive Minders receive:
  • a tuition waiver for the course for which they serve as Hive Minder;
  • training to be a Hive Minder;
  • a Hive Minder reference packet;
  • assistance and support from SLIG's Virtual Coordinator, Tech Assistant, and Director for emergencies and questions.
