Kathy Bray -- Making the Best Use of FamilySearch.org - What’s New and Cool!

In this class you will learn how to:

• Gain access to FamilySearch Family Tree (if you haven’t already done so)

• Use Historical Records search. Records span billions of names across hundreds of collections — including birth, marriage, death, probate, land, military, IGI extracted, and more. Tips to make your search more successful

• How to quickly save a source to your FamilySearch Family Tree Source Box

• Search specific locations and/or collections such as IGI, BillionGraves, Social Security Death

Index, etc.

• Browse images for those records not yet indexed

• Use the Trees search to find ancestors in the Pedigree Resource or Ancestral files

• Use the Catalog search to search the catalog of the SLC Family History Library

• Use the Books search to search a substantial collection of digitized books from the archives of many important North American family history libraries. Collection includes Histories of families; county and local histories; how-to books on genealogy; genealogy magazines; periodicals; medieval books (including histories and pedigrees); and gazetteers

• Upload a GEDCOM to the Pedigree Resource File, which will make it searchable for others doing a “Trees” search.

• Use the Help Center’s knowledge database to get quick answers.

Kathy Bray -- Using Descendancy Research to Find and Qualify Your Ancestors for Temple Work

Instead of searching for names beginning with your grandparents or great-grandparents, you begin several generations back and search through the descendants of each of your ancestors.

This is the easiest way to find names of ancestors needing temple work. This type of search allows you to see a full family unit at a glance—the siblings of each of your ancestors and their families. These are your cousins (several times removed) and are often referred to as your collateral lines.

• Being able to see the full family unit in a pedigree layout, you can easily identify which persons are either ready for temple work, or need to be qualified for temple work.

• The temple status symbols and what they mean

• How to qualify someone for temple work that has a “needs more information” status

• When an married couple do not show any descendants? Were they really childless? How to find missing children and add them to your pedigree and qualify them for temple work and be sealed to their parents.

• How to properly estimate dates/places in order to do a proper search of the new FamilySearch (FamilySearch Family Tree) database for a duplicate record.
