New African American Scholarship Opportunity

Board for Certification of Genealogists African American Scholarship
Deadline: 8 September 2020

In an event to "increase the number of under-represented communities in the ranks of Certified Genealogists®, in line with BCG's mission," the Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG) announced in June that it would award scholarships to up to three African American students to attend "one of five premier national instiututes."

BCG president, LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson, said: "The Board for Certification of Genealogists is pleased to sponsor attendance at these high-quality educational offerings." Each scholarship will "cover up to $1,700 of the tuition, travel, and lodging expense." BCG will also "waive its final application fee of $300 for scholarship recipients who submit portfolios of work to be considered for certification within three years of the announcement of an award."

SLIG is pleased to be included as one of the five institutes eligible for awardees to attend. Even though the scholarship application and award cycle falls later in the SLIG registration year, Peg Ivanyo, current SLIG director, stated: "We will work with BCG to ensure that the scholarship may be utilized to attend any of the 2021 courses if desired."

Details and application requirements may be found at www.bcgcertification.org/african-american-scholarship. The deadline for applications is September 8, 2020. Awards will be announced in October 2020.
